Sushil Bhattacharya – The FIRST COACH of East Bengal Club – 1961

1945, 1961

1) 1924 – Sushil Bhattacharya, son of Dr Atul Chandra Bhattacharya, was born in Bagdogra, Darjeeling.

2) 1945 – Joined East Bengal Club as an Inside Forward.

3) Sushil Bhattacharya played 14 of the league matches and helped the team lift the CFL in his first year.

4) 1948 – Leaves East Bengal Club

5) Sushil Bhattacharya, first persuaded PK Banerjee’s father to let his son play in the Calcutta League.

6) 1950-56 – Played for Eastern Railways.

7) 1951 – East Bengal borrowed him from Eastern Railways to play for them at the Durand Cup semi-final and final – it was the first year East Bengal won the all-India tournament.

8) He was also assistant to the legendary coach Bagha Shome, at Eastern Railway.

9) 1961 – Sushil Bhattacharya was appointed East Bengal’s first football coach.

10) He mentored some of the greatest players of Bengal, among them Pradip Banerjee (PK), Sukumar Samajpati, Ram Bahadur, Tulsidas Balaram, Bhaskar Ganguly, Sudhir Karmakar, Shibaji Banerjee, Prasanta Banerjee, Arun Banerjee, Krishanu De, Subhash Bhowmick, Kabir Bose, Achinta Belel, Shanti Mullick, Samaresh Chowdhury, Kuntala Ghosh Dastidar and Gautam Sarkar.

11) 1961 – Under him, the club won the coveted Calcutta Football League and the IFA Shield Championship in 1961.

12) 1971 – brought Tollygunge Agragami from the 5th division to the 1st division.

13) 1972-73 – Coach of Eastern Railways.

14) 1975 – Sushil Bhattacharya started women’s football in India, becoming the first coach of the Indian women’s football team.

15) He was also the first coach of the Bengal women’s team.

16) 2008 – Retires from Coaching.
